AGR4 ME is Digital Vision’s film grain management and
electronic noise reduction system designed for for film
and videotape restoration and MPEG pre-processing.
The AGR4 ME’s advanced motion processing and
adaptive 3D filters, including a new edge preserving
spatio-temporal filter and optional motion estimation,
allow facilities to produce the cleanest and sharpest
pictures possible without generating processing artefacts – even with aggressive settings!

Grain Management processing in more detail
|
The AGR4 ME can be used in a vast range of
applications, from creatively managing the intensity of
film grain while preserving its structure to eliminating
noise on video material.
Primary applications
- Grain reduction on film dailies
- Creative grain management for motion pictures,
commercials, music videos, and long-form television
- High quality & cost-effective restoration of film and
video-originated material
Key features
- Recursive filter
- Spike suppression
- Special film grain processing
- Three channel colour adaptation
- Luminance adaptation
- Dual processing engines with advanced Viper keying
- PHAME™ motion estimation
- Available in SD, HD RGB, 2k and DCI 2k x 1080
formats
Edge preserving filter
AGR4 ME includes a new edge-preserving 3D spatio-
temporal filter, highly adapted to precise film grain
reduction. The ratio between spatial and temporal
filtering can be set. The edge preserving filter can then
be combined with recursive filtering, adaptively or as a
basic level of grain/noise reduction. Also comes with a
“spike noise” suppression filter.
Recursive filter
To provide the cleanest pictures, the AGR4 ME uses
recursive filtering in combination with an enhanced
version of Digital Vision’s motion estimation technology
to analyse motion content in a sequence of film or
video
images.
Special film grain processing
The AGR4 ME takes grain reduction one step further by introducing grain size adaptation and frame based
processing optimised for film and progressive video
formats. The frame based filtering also includes unique
features for 3/2 pulldown.
Three channel colour
adaptation
Advanced yet an easy-to-use chroma adaptation mode
increases or reduces processing in selected colour
ranges. A typical application is blue screen compositing
where the background needs additional noise reduction.
Features three independent channels.
Luminance adaptation
Adaptation of luminance filtering for different noise or
film grain characteristics is provided to match particular
film stock. Separate threshold and level controls for
highlights and lowlights increase the performance in
difficult scenes.
Dual processing engines with
advanced Viper keying
The advanced Viper keying controls the mix between the
parallel processing engines. Key area adjustments can
be viewed by enabling the on screen graphic. The AGR4
ME provides the choice of two key shapes: rectangle
or ellipse that can be positioned, resized and rotated.
Adjustable soft edge is available for both key shapes.
Motion Estimation
The optional Motion Estimation (ME) module provides
improved recursive and spatio-temporal filtering. The
ME module is an enhanced version of Digital Vision’s
Emmy™ Award-winning and patented PHAME™ motion
estimation technology.

“With this tool we can offer clients a real-time process for dealing with grain – much faster than we could provide with a software-based tool. And when the colourists aren’t using it, we will put it in service for restoration projects. The DVNR helps us offer HD mastering services that give filmmakers the highest possible quality at a fraction of the cost of full 2k processing.”
Juan Carlos Astoquillca, director of engineering & technology at Deluxe
Digital Media.
